Biographical Background

Lance Miller is serving his 30th year as Chief Executive Officer of the Metal Treating Institute, an international trade association headquartered in Jacksonville Beach, FL.

He has been active in the Florida Society of Association Executives, serving as chairman of various committees, an officer, and its president in 1982. He was named that organization's Association Executive of the Year in 1984. Lance was president of the FSAE Foundation and chairman of the Florida State University Association Management Advisory Committee. He also remains active in the Tallahassee Society of Association Executives, of which he is a charter member.

At the national level, Lance completed a three-year term on the ASAE Board of Directors. He has also served on the Awards and Membership Committee as well as a team leader for evaluations. He received his CAE designation in 1976 and is a graduate of the Institute of Organization Management (U.S. Chamber of Commerce), a faculty member at four institute campuses and was a member of the Northeastern Board of Regents.

Before becoming CEO of the Metal Treating Institute, Lance had his own association management company, where he managed as many as ten associations at once. Prior to opening his own firm in 1976, Lance was executive director of the 3,000 member Florida Engineering Society and before that assistant executive director of the Southeastern Manufactured Housing Institute, a regional trade association headquartered in Atlanta. He began his association management career as assistant executive director of the New Jersey Builders Association.

Lance received his BA in Political Science from Stetson University and a JD from Florida Coastal School of Law. Upon graduation, he served as an artillery officer in the United States Army, after which he paid his dues in the glamorous, but underpaid, radio and television broadcasting industry as a disc jockey, sportscaster and newsman. Then he found his niche in the association profession.
